Sarah Constructions Heads East

THIRD generation family-owned firm Sarah Constructions has new headquarters and aims to turnover $200 million in 2013-14.
Now based in purpose-built offices in Eastwood, the firm is this year celebrating its 50th year of operation and employs more than 300 people.
Managing director James Sarah said its major new projects included the $10 million Australian Federal Police facility at the Adelaide Airport. It had also won a $15 million contract to design and build the Murray Bridge Racing Club grandstand and function centre.
"We recorded a turnover of $150 million for the 2010-11 financial year and have set a target of hitting $200 million in 2013-14," Mr Sarah said.
"I think (our success is helped) by the sectors of the market we work in.
They are not as badly affected by the vagaries of the economic cycle than some others might be. SA aged care is something that's continuing to go along very steadily and that's a function of (our ageing) population rather than the economy."
Sarah Constructions was recently awarded Federal Safety Commissioner's accreditation, meaning it could tender for Commonwealth government-funded work, valued at $5 million or more.
Mr Sarah said this accreditation would help the firm with its growth strategy, which included increasing its construction and refurbishment work.
"We want to continue to grow the business in a steady, risk managed manner," he said.
"One of the things we have been really successful with is recruiting and training, particularly young graduates. We've also boosted our capabilities across industry sectors but particularly within aged care, retirement living, education and retail."
Repeat business was a key part of Sarah's success.
"The relationships we have with our long-term clients mean we have a solid repeat customer base," he said.
